Massimo Pupillo is a renowned Italian bassist and composer, best known as a founder of the avant-garde band ZU, with extensive experience in noise and experimental music. His 2020 solo album, The Black Iron Prison, is a drone/dark-ambient work recorded in solitude at Thighpaulsandra’s Welsh studio using heavily processed bass and synths
The album distills a lifetime of extra-musical experience and readings, in particular Gnostic texts, Philip K Dick, and the alchemical phases of the Magnum Opus, starting with the initial Nigredo; a fundamental step, that was also chosen as the main image for the album artwork.
The title, "The Black Iron Prison", is drawn from the Philip K Dick concept of an all-pervasive system of social control; a description that is particularly apt and meaningful in 2020.
